What is Model United Nations (MUN)?
Model United Nations is a simulation of the workings of the United Nations, an international organization which works towards world peace and encourages cooperation between member states in affairs which range from international law to economic development. Students serve as diplomats to represent their respective countries in various committees. At Connect Model United Nations November 2011, committees include the Security Council, Politburo of China, World Health Organization, European Union, Interpol, Committee on the Status of Women, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. At a Model United Nations conference, students engage in active debate in an attempt to resolve some of the world’s most pressing conflicts. Delegates are provided the opportunity to experience first-hand international politics and crises, and to feel the weight of being responsible for the world’s security for a stimulating three days. The goal of a Model United Nations is to encourage students to take on a global perspective and to appreciate the importance of open discussion. Delegates will also be able to connect with other motivated students and broaden their horizons.Why should I participate in Model UN?
Participating in a Model United Nations conference is sure to be a memorable experience! It allows students to learn about international relations and global politics first-hand. Model UN also challenges students to make use of their problem solving and critical thinking skills to resolve the conflicts of today's world. In addition to the richly educational experience that is Model UN, conferences are bound to be fun. Delegates will meet many other students with similar interests and ambitions to become global citizens. Being a part of ConnectMUN can even help delegates in fulfilling their work experience hours required for the Graduation Portfolio program.For delegates new to MUN, the Connect Program will be able to assist them in being more involved with Model UN. Participation in ConnectMUN is an opportunity to meet new people, make new friends, and perhaps even open new doors of interest!
What is the dress code for ConnectMUN?
The dress code for ConnectMUN is business casual. Common dress codes include suits, blouses, collared shirts, and appropriate sweaters. In order to maintain a professional appearance, no jeans or shorts are allowed. For ladies, skirts should be no higher than three inches above the knee. Please avoid wearing t-shirts and runners to the conference. Please also remember to ensure your business attire is comfortable!What does my delegate/conference fee cover?
The delegate/conference fee for ConnectMUN covers the costs of your hotel room for the weekend, committee rooms, and conference materials. A portion of the fee is also put towards our social event, which is sure to be an unforgettable experience!How do I become a head delegate?
If you are interested in becoming a head delegate, ask your teacher sponsor from your school and get a couple of friends to register with you. By becoming a head delegate, you will become a liaison between the delegates from your school and the ConnectMUN secretariat.Coming from out of town, can I get hotel rooms earlier?
If you are a delegate from out of town, you will be able to receive your hotel room sooner. Please contact the secretariat at info@connectmun.ca for more details.Is it necessary to bring a laptop to the conference?
No, a laptop is not required. However, some delegates find laptop computers useful for typing up resolutions, notes, and doing research. Internet connection will be available at the conference.What are the award opportunities for this MUN conference?
ConnectMUN November 2011 has awards for the best and outstanding delegates, as well as delegates worthy of honourable mention. Delegate awards will be selected by the director and chairs of each respective committee. There will also be an award for best delegation.I have lessons during the weekend, is it possible for me to leave during the conference to go to my lesson?
It is advised that you change or postpone any other activities or lessons that may conflict with ConnectMUN. However, if it is necessary for you to leave during the conference, please inform your sponsor teacher, as well as a member of the Secretariat. Please keep in mind that the Secretariat has worked tirelessly over the preceding months to create a memorable and educational conference for you and your peers. Also, missing a committee session may hinder your opportunity in receiving an award.
Are Position Papers mandatory?
Only delegates who have submitted a Position Paper are eligible for an award. Position Papers can be emailed to their respective committee email addresses.Who should I contact if I have more questions?
